چکیده

Pervaporation experiments were performed on microporous titania membranes using several binary liquids containing 2-20 wt % water. The membrane was nonselective in the separation of water from alcohols and p-dioxane but showed a remarkably high selectivity in the separation of water from ethylene glycol/water mixtures with < or =15 mol % water. The absence of selectivity under most conditions is explained by the large pore size (0.9 nm) of microporous titania. The high selectivity for water in the separation from ethylene glycol can be explained by the formation of a hydrogen-bonded network of ethylene glycol in the micropores, which blocks transport of ethylene glycol, while water can still permeate through. These networks are disrupted by water at higher concentrations, leading to full loss of membrane selectivity.

Removal of Dilute Benzene in Water through Ionic Liquid/Poly(Vinyl Chloride) Membranes by Pervaporation

This paper focuses on the effects of the addition of an ionic liquid, 1-Allyl-3-butylimidazilium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl)imide ([ABIM]TFSI), which has a high affinity for benzene, into the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane on the pervaporation characteristics of the removal of benzene from aqueous solutions of dilute benzene. When aqueous solutions of 100~500 ppm benzene were permeated ...

Development and Characterization of Nanocomposite Membranes based on Chitosan, Polystyrene and Montmorillonite for Pervaporation Separation of Phenol and Chlorophenols from Water

The novel nanocomposite membranes were successfully prepared by the incorporation of different concentrations (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of montmorillonite (MMT) as a nanoadditive into a blend of chitosan/polystyrene (CS/PS) at a ratio of 3:1 on the basis of solution-casting method and they were subsequently used for the separation of phenol, p-chlorophenol, and 2,4-dichlorophenol from water through p...

Mechanistic Modeling of Organic Compounds Separation from Water via Polymeric Membranes

A mathematical model considering mass and momentum transfer was developed for simulation of ethanol dewatering via pervaporation process. The process involves removal of water from a water/ethanol liquid mixture using a dense polymeric membrane. The model domain was divided into two compartments including feed and membrane. For a description of water transport in ...

Molecular sieving MFI-type zeolite membranes for pervaporation separation of xylene isomers.

Molecular sieving MFI-type zeolite membranes were prepared by a secondary growth method without using an organic template. Silicalite membranes with intercrystalline pores minimized or eliminated were obtained by this synthesis method which avoids the template removal step. The silicalite membrane exhibits molecular sieving characteristics with pervaporation separation factor for p-xylene to o-...
